Speaking on the occasion, MLC Chikkala Ramachandra Rao said that managements of industries should protect its workers.

He cited the Bhopal gas tragedy which claimed thousands of lives in 1984. The MLC said that the victims and their families were still suffering from many diseases in Bhopal. Later, they took the oath to makr the Security Day.

The cadets of NDRF displayed mock drill on how to save lives of the people in emergency situations like fire, chemical and gas leaks. They also displayed the rescue methods in emergency situations in industries.

Industries Department Director Bala Kishore, Deputy Inspector of Factories Siva Kumar Reddy, Apollo CEO Dr Sandip, Godavari EHS Association President Gyana Sundaram and others participated. Prior to this, the Joint Collector launched an exhibition of the emergency utensils and apparatus that was useful in emergencies at the JNTU.

Functions

The Factories Department works for

• Safety, Health and Welfare of 7.17 lakh workers employed in 26469 registered factories in the State.
• Safety of public residing in the vicinity of  Major Accident Prone/Hazardous  Factories.
• Safety of the plant, machinery and material in Factories.

Legislation being implemented:

• The Factories Act, 1948 and Andhra Pradesh Factories Rules
• The Payment of Wages Act, 1936 and Andhra Pradesh Payment of Wages Rules (in respect of Factories)
• The Maternity Benefit Act, 1961 and Rules (in respect of Factories)
• Manufacture, Storage and Import of Hazardous Chemicals Rules–1989 (in respect of Factories)
• Chemical Accidents (Emergency Planning, Preparedness and Response) Rules 1996

Services

• Approval of plans of new factories and extensions, additional installations in case of existing factories covered under Factories Act.  
• Registration of new factories and issue of  licences for their operation.  
• Inspection of identified factories including Major Accident Hazard Factories
• Ensuring the provision of welfare amenities in factories such as Crèche, Rest Shed, Lunch Room, Canteen, Safe/ Cool Drinking Water, Occupational Health Centres, etc. depending on employment.
• Enquiry into complaints relating to non-compliance of the provisions of the Act and Rules
• Organising pre-employment and periodical medical examination of workers involved in hazardous processes
• Prohibition of Children employment  in factories
• Enquiry into accidents resulting in injuries, fatalities and loss to property/ dangerous occurrences.
