Dear Dr Amar,
It’s Earth Day and we’re looking back at our history to help guide us forward.
The first Earth Day in 1970 mobilized more than 20-million Americans to pour into the streets of every major American city and demand change. It remains the largest citizen action event in human history — and it created massive political momentum that led to today’s environmental laws to safeguard clean water, clean our air, protect endangered species and stop hazardous waste pollution.
48 years later, the Earth needs that same mobilization and momentum.
Now more than ever, we need to work together — as we face an even a set of global environmental challenges that simply cannot be ignored, from loss of biodiversity to climate change to plastic pollution.
Enough is enough. We need decisive action. We need to make personal, positive changes in our lives and to demand sweeping policy changes from businesses and our governments.
“Today, the world is hanging by a thread,” says Kathleen Rogers, president of Earth Day Network. That’s why we’re launching a more diverse, more passionate global environmental movement.”
It’s Earth Day. So let’s do everything we can. Together, let’s stop using single-use plastics. Let’s work on cleaning up our rivers and oceans. Let’s plant trees and stop deforestation. Let’s protect the EPA and vote for leaders who vow to protect the Earth.
It’s Earth Day. It's up to us.
